Judge Avalos: Pro Vita Sua

Judge Catalina Avalos

Judge Catalina Avalos

I am writing in my personal capacity, as a supporter of the reelection of Judge Catalina Avalos. And of course I will immediately plagiarize Walter Reynoso, jurista eximio and a friend of us all, who had the following to say about her Honor Catalina Avalos:

...I am emphasizing the contributions Catalina has made .... to the legal community. A Colombian born Jurist that has an impeccable reputation for integrity, she deserves all of our support. She truly is someone that I am proud and privileged to support. I think we can bring out more ... [persons] and others that attended the party that we had for her after her robbing, to attend tomorrow. At least one other hispanic Broward Judge has drawn opposition. -Walter Reynoso

I and my colleagues who have close lazos to Colombia and who have gotten to know Catalina Avalos over the years are happy to do what we can to insure her reelection, including, but not limited to, spiritual and financial support. Judge Avalos is a graduate of the University of Miami College of Law, made her bones (couldn't resist) as Assistant State Attorney in Broward County and has been a good friend and true professional at all times. To say we were proud when the news reached us of Catalina’s appointment by then Governor of Florida Jeb Bush as Judge on the Broward County Court is a serious understatement. Judge Catalina Avalos, in addition to being the fourth Hispanic to serve on the Broward County Court, had become the first Colombian-born judge in the United States! We intend to do all we can to maintain her in her post as flag bearer for the community.

Of course, we knew that Catalina, although as pleasant a person as one could meet, true gente decente, had a tough streak in her that together with her innate sense of fairness and solid legal skills, made up as good a judicial temperament as one could wish. At Catalina’s robing ceremony, that several of us attended, the introductory allocution for the newly minted Judge was given by her daughter, and it was far and away the best of all those we heard. With such portends, we knew her judicial career would take off and indeed it did. As she is now running for re-election, several of us wish to assist her campaign by organizing a fund raiser in honor of Judge Catalina Avalos. That fund raiser will take place tomorrow: Thursday, February 21, 2008 from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM.
at the Residence of Walter A. Reynoso, 1112 S Northlake Dr., Hollywood, FL 33019. I sincerely hope you all will be there to cheer on our colleague at the dawn of a brilliant career (Supreme Court too much to hope for? Not at all!) and of course to partake of food, drink and good cheer. ¡Hasta Mañana!
